What should I upgrade first?

Marching speed, shooting (helps cats), scouting so you can't be scouted, planting for more troop support, and turrets to 10.  Traps are more effective until you can get turrets to 10, though turrets at 9 are quite effective as well.

The numbers you see below are cut and dry. No matter what your tech level, attribute rating or equipment rating, you will be able to know exact modified ratings of each unit. Try determining your modified defense for a unit, and adding its life rating (found in the barracks) for an accurate estimate of how much damage they can withstand.

Likewise you can determine your attack in the same way to understand how much damage your units will deal. 

There are infinitely more uses for the numbers above as any tactic involving your attributes can be created or reverse engineered using this list.

Do the math for your speed as outlined in this guide and your sum will be your movement rate on the battlefield.
